A major studio production portraying the life of former South African president Nelson Mandela is set to be released in November 2013.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom stars British actor Idris Elba in the title role and is based on Mandela’s autobiography, released in 1994. Alongside Elba, fellow Briton Naomie Harris has been cast as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela
Directed by Justin Chadwick, the film chronicles Nelson Mandela’s life journey from his childhood in a rural village, to 27 years spent in prison during the apartheid era, through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
The real Mandela remains in hospital with a recurring lung infection. The 95-year old is in a critical but stable condition, says the South African government.
