Musicians unite for Mali


A group of prominent Malian musicians have united to record a song promoting peace in the troubled country.

Mali has a long and proud musical heritage, and now one of the country’s biggest stars has responded to the crisis engulfing the country by uniting its array of talented artists.  Folk singer Fatoumata Diawara has brought together some of the country’s most famous musicians to record a song calling for peace.

The track, titled  ‘Mali-ko’ (Peace), features some of the best known musical talents to come out of Mali in recent years, including Amadou and Mariam, Oumou Sangare, Bassekou Kouyate, Vieux Farka Toure, Djelimady Tounkara, Toumani Diabate, Khaira Arby, Kasse Mady Diabate, Baba Salah, Afel Bocoum, Tiken Jah, Amkoullel and Habib Koite amongst many others.

The song’s lyrics say that “the time has come for us to speak up about the crisis,” and calls for men and women throughout the country to unite because “when we stand together all of Africa is stronger.”
