The Ethiopian government has denied Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is critically ill but says he has been admitted to hospital.
Ethiopian prime minister Meles Zenawi has been admitted to hospital, according to reports. Zenawi’s health has been the subject of intense speculation since he failed to attend last week’s African Union summit in Addis Ababa. Some commenters have described his condition as ‘critical’ and there have been suggestions that he will not complete his current term in office.
The Ethiopian government has denied these claims, however, saying that Mr Meles is in a “good condition” and that they will provide a full update in due course. However, a press conference on the matter originally scheduled for Wednesday has now been postponed until later in the week.
Mr Meles has been Ethiopia’s leader for over 20 years, since his rebel movement took control of the country after overthrowing the communist former government in 1991.
